Question by : Atheists: If you had been starving or homeless and the only way to get support was a Christian “charity”?
Would you go and pray and worship with them and sell you soul to Jesus in order to get support? Do you believe it is sad that so a lot of men and women have to make a decision like that? Are churches genuinely helping folks or is it just a way to get a lot more converts?
No they do not hold a gun to your head but they do not precisely maintain it secular either, do they?

Christian charities do NOT make you convert. You’re very inintelligent for thinking this.

If you’re an atheist, you’re an atheist. Praying to nothing is probably the most ideal way to get a full belly for free.

many churches watch out for false converts.

This is moot, they only serve themselves. There is always they desire to “enlighten”.

For there to be conditions in order for a group of “loving” Christians to help people as they believe they are commanded… would be disgusting. And there are cases where some have done just that, unfortunately.

I’d just pretend to worship. It is sad that many people are forced into religion. Some churches help people but many just see dollar signs from new followers.

No I will not sell my soul to Jesus. But i will pay attention to where they keep the collection with an eye to share it with god.

This is especially so in many regions of thailand, cambodia and vietnam.
Christian missionaries from other richer asian nations like korea, singapore or taiwan bring their religion along with them when they do “charity”.
I’ve been on one of those trips before and it’s really “Let me tell you about MY religion and I will give you blankets and food”
And after they give out the blankets and food, the christian missionaries literally go around destroying buddhist or tribal religious artefacts.
And many of these poor people are either too helpless, friendly or hungry to even argue with the christians.
It’s not really charity. It’s charity with a religious motive. I rather go to a non-religious charity!

I don’t think the soup they hand out is laced with Scriptures. I don’t think those who go out and help others make it a barting situation ”OK I got soup and rolls but you can only have them if you place your hands together and say after me…” Charity is not about what you get out of it but what you give to others. If people are only doing it to seek converts then its not an act of charity in the first place.
PS I am not a Christian…

Well being the not brain washed individual that I am, I would conceivingly act like a Christian “Ooos-ss-ss-ss Praiissssee the holyyy LOOOOOWD” something along those lines

As far as I know the charities are not run by nazis but by genuinely helpful people who don’t care where you come from, philosophically or spiritually. As far as helping vs converting, one can’t be cleanly separated from the other and so it is not easy to be critical without appearing mean.

Yes, I will.
Personally though, I think pretending to believe in something is a lot easier than a believer pretending not to believe in it. On the bright side of things, I’d say I’m more versatile than they are. LOL

Good point. I would keep my dignity, but in dire situations, even that only lasts so long. Especially if I had other people to think of. In that case, my dignity be damned, I’m Christian. Gotta feed the family.
I actually volunteer with Habitat for Humanity (Christian organization that builds homes for people that couldn’t afford it otherwise). They always pray before every work day. It makes me feel awkward since we never openly bring up religion, I never know if I’m the only Atheist or non-Christian there lol.

If I were poor, homeless and desperate, I would go through the motions of praying and worship if it means my next meal would be secure.
They are helping people (in the short term) in hopes of getting converts but I see it more as a “free trial or free sample promotion” type advertising. Nobody really buys it.

I rather die than sell myself out to lies.
Problem of hypothetical questions: Your situation would never happen. I could go hundreds of other places first.
Definitely just a way to get converts.

While I do appreciate the Christian tradition of Charity and believe that many Atheists do not give Christian Charities enough credit; I do not think that Christian Charity should be conditional on faith (you want our help, you have to worship the way we do).
I don’t know where these Christians got the idea that Charity should be an arbiter of proselytizing; but they didn’t get it from our book.

Hey I’m Atheist but this is a huge exaggeration.
They don’t require you to convert before helping you.
They help people out, and then take that opportunity to spread the word about their religion.
There is a big difference, you aren’t required to do anything and it’s a small price to pay.
They do good work, I think you should do a little research before stating things as if they were fact.

Christians don’t force others to become Christians…they accept everyone, but would like to share the word of God with others so they may know the truth

If you knew for absolute certainty that a person was going to spend an eternity in Hell, would you think it more important to give them the information that could rescue them from that fate, or give them a meal to get them by for one more day?
To keep silent would be to be a sick, depraved, heartless disgrace of a human being. It is impossible to force someone to become a genuine Christian. And only someone who is the real deal is truly rescued from Hell – God is not fooled.

If I were to not go to their charity, and instead starve myself, what would I be starving myself for? It’s not like I’d be giving the middle finger to God.
I’d eat and whore myself out to nothing in particular, rather than freeze and starve to prove a point to nobody.
William Dec 20 2011 - 8:10 pm
Sure, I’d go and lie, I can chant and pray and roll my eyes back in my head until the cows come home, doesn’t make me a believer. Anyone who does convert because of a bit of food and maybe a blanket was obviously having problems with reality already.
Sam Dec 20 2011 - 8:20 pm

Michael Dec 20 2011 - 8:51 pm
Well given that I don’t have an immaterial soul I’d do what I needed to do then bugger off out of there. Usually the Salvo’s don’t ask for prayer and when they do they just ask that you shut up while they say their spiel.
When you are homeless, as I have been you take what’s on offer-what else you gonna do? Heck when I was homeless I took food from Food Not Bombs, I’m no more an Anarchist than I am a Christian!

Good question and bless you child for takng these ignorant rude comments in the room. These atheist really believe the churches is making money from this whenn all of the money goes to buy things for the needy and yes we do pay the churches how else would they survive, and what is wrong with feeding the poor all I know is atheist waist money on these dumb research studies while the churches spend money on feeding hurngry children and parents and some churches make homes for the homless. You tell me what is wrong with that and I wann know do atheists really know what churches do just because th other churches do horrible things dont mean all of them are like that and atheists arent that good them selves but doing good is evil and doing evil is good

if it meant i could surive another day, and stuff my face with lots of good warm hearty foods, yes, yes in a heartbeat, soul sold to the jman
course i think its sad, they do help, but lets just say, its not exactly altruistic, and we all know that

I Would Find It Sad If I Went To My Church And They Were Only Helping Catholics, And Anybody Else Who Were Willing To Sacrifice Their Own Beliefs To Be Catholics In Order To Be Helped…
