Question by mane: what is a good answer when someone asks “why you want to be a police officer at age 40?”?
Answers such as “I want to make a good distinction in the community” or “I want to give back to my community” only functions when you are in your twenties. Recruit Investigator was asking me “but why at this late age?” What are some great answer to this query?

The answers you gave were great! Why don’t you think they apply to you? Do you think only 20-somethings can give back or make a difference? Nonsense. Stick to these answers and make the difference.

Kudos to you for following your dream.

Because I grow and learn something new every day. It allows me to build and establish long term relationships. I enjoy helping newer officers learn the ropes and mentoring them. I enjoy the challenge. I really want to contribute to the stability of society by enforcing laws. I want to help create justice.

“I’ve finally realized that I’m ready to take on such an important responsibility and my maturity can only be an asset to protect the citizens of my community.”

    How ’bout that?

Try something like “I spent the first 20 years of my adult life working for my own benefit, and now at 40, I find that I want to do something important, that matters for the community and helps others.”

Use your age as an asset. I can’t give you examples to these suggestions, you’ll have to come up with that on your own. They already have enough guys who like to “Run & Gun”. Emphasis how your maturity will be a plus. Your communication skills are more advanced. Remember, a police officer’s goal is to diffuse a tense situation, not aggrivate it. Your philosophy is one of being skeptically wise.
But remember, you don’t want to appear weak, so when the sh*t hits the fan, let him know you can be a trigger man to.

There is no good answer. I would question why any one at any age would want to be a cop. But at 40, what have you been doing and do you want to work patrol or a desk or training or investigatory

I will refrain from answering that directly, if you attempt to give someone else’s answer, it may sound rehearsed and insincere.

The one thing I would emphasize is the life experience you have developed over the last 20 years. Most employers find life experience and maturity more valuable than a formal education alone.

Older police officers tend to be more even tempered, more apt to solve a dispute with rationale, rather than an arrest, and are generally calmer in dealing with irate individuals. There maturity has driven from them the need to prove they are tough. The last 4 officers hired at my dept have been 43+

Well, why do you want to be a police officer at the age of 40?

I mean there must be some reason why you are considerign this choice of career at this time in your life…just be honest.

Not sure why the community based answers are only good for folks in their 20s, do folks in their 20s and 30s not give a sh!t about the community?
