Question by David S: Why do folks say they’re “giving back” to the communities?
I have heard individuals speak on tv about “giving back” to their communities. At times, they’re wealthy, popular, or both. Often, they are ordinary individuals. I can see how a skilled sports star who earns millions may possibly really feel compelled to “give back,” but why do typical folks use that phrase if they’ve never ever received something in the very first place, and are merely helping their communities?

Best answer:

I feel the phrase sort of refers to helping out the less fortunate, rather than actually undertaking a favour for the community.

What do you feel? Answer below!

They say “giving back” because they may feel like the community “gave” them support to help them reach their goals in life. This could be that the community encouraged them, there were organizations there that they were involved in or people from their hometown who had a big impact on them. They want to then “return the favor”, so they want to “give back” with service or donations.

Giving back makes it sound like the person owed something to the communities, and the person may or may not feel that way. I have heard about drug dealers who “give back” to the community, and I would say they DO owe the community because they have selfishly taken so much away from it.

Free library Services, a beautiful park, Free Concerts on the lawn during the summer. I receive these free. So when I donate my time, labor and money to community services I am giving back.
One does not always need a reason to volunteer.
