Query by Myron The Bloody Siren: Is it acceptable to say “black men and women” these days or is it nevertheless not Pc…?
I am asking in all seriousness, is it considered offensive or crass to refer to these of African American ethnicity as merely “black individuals” or really should we be saying “African Americans?” Usually occasions, if a individual is from the West Indies, for example, and they have dark skin, it really is not correct to contact them “African Americans” so just for simplicity is it okay to just call such folks “black people?”

I am a white individual and I significantly choose to be known as “white” rather than “caucasian.” When I hear “caucasian” it makes me feel of a cocktail beverage, e.g. a White Russian.

Have we reached the point where we can cut by means of this Computer silliness and just use descriptive terms with out fearing that it will offend others? It really is just truly tough to know what the correct word is at any given time, particularly in enterprise, can you please assist me so that I know what the appropriate factor to say is?

Thank you.

Lol, call us Black people, isn’t that what we are? Calling all Blacks “African American” would be incorrect because what if they aren’t African American. Black is a broader term, therefore if you feel like referring to us as that, feel free to do so.

Those who get defensive over this are sensitive butt hurt wimps.

I’m black and don’t see what’s wrong with being called black, but if you’re in a professional environment it’s better to just be PC or avoid using any controversial terms all together.

We all have to be PC in a professional environment, not just white people and don’t really see how it’s all that hard. Unless you’re in HR I don’t see how this would be a normal everyday concern.

It depends on what terms you are with the people.

And what you know about them, if your friend has is Jamaican for instance, and you know he grew up perhaps all his life in Kinston – he is cool with you and says no man call me The Jamaican or call me black then that is how he wants to be addressed, but if he doesn’t want to be addressed like this you are not going to do anything to break ties with him.

Or what ever the situation, perhaps you meet up with someone who is extremely dark from India – you wouldn’t deliberately offend him and say my black Indian friend you would say this is my friend from the North of India. Or he was living in Calcutta or Bombay, people you introduce him to may love the films shot in that city and it is a means for conversation or if your friend is from Jamaica perhaps people love the music popular there – topics for conversation so we shouldn’t offend other people because they are not like our little group.

I find african-american more offensive actually, since I’m black but an immigrant. the black people who’ve lived here for generations are just american, I don’t get why they need to be hyphenated all the time
