Russian steel magnate and billionaire Mr. Deripaska was visiting little town of Pikalyovo, 130 miles from St. Petersburg, becoming led about 1 of his cement factories by a fire-breathing Mr. Putin, who likened the tycoon to a “cockroach” on Russian national Television.
“You have created thousands of men and women hostage to your ambitions, your lack of professionalism — or maybe just your trivial greed,” Mr. Putin berated Mr. Deripaska, ahead of forcing him to pay all outstanding wages and sign a contract for the factory. “Where is the social responsibility of organization?” Following which the Russian prime minister was greeted by cheers from the grateful workers.

I saw that news item, too. I don’t buy it — that was an act put on to bolster Putin’s popularity.

Maybe you should focus on the one part of the article: “forcing him to pay ALL OUTSTANDING wages”
Meaning that Deripaska had not been paying his employees.
Deripaska was lucky that the employees didn’t revolt and string him up from the nearest tree. Putin probably saved his life.

why weren’t the workers paid? Shouldn’t they be paid for their hard work. That’s typically the conservative mantra, work hard and get paid. Or does that all go away to coddle the rich?
