Question by Cloe’s Mom!!!: What is the “mandatory volunteering” legislation about?
I know that Obama is attempting to pass some thing that consists of mandatory volunteering. But, what is it all about? What does the law entail? who would it affect. I tried to Google it but nothing clear cut came from that search.. so i thought I’d ask here.

There never was mandatory volunteering (an oxymoron, actually). Rather teens could get grants towards their college education by doing community service.

Mandatory volunteering, that’s like consensual rape, right?

Nothing. He is not looking to pass anything that includes mandatory volunteering.
H.R. 1388 (GIVE Act) was passed with strong bi-partisan support. The legislation reauthorizes and expands established national service programs including VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) and the National Civilian Community Corps, both of which are AmeriCorps programs.
Some people say the bill contains “mandatory service requirement for all able young people,” but that phrase is nowhere to be found in either the House-passed bill or the Senate version.
Granted, in the original bill there were recommendations on how to increase volunteerism, and if a mandatory volunteer system could be implemented. However, that language was REMOVED from the bill.
Republican Orrin Hatch said: “Consistent with our All-Volunteer Army and volunteer opportunities and individuals’ choice in communities, nothing in this legislation is mandatory. This bill simply provides more Americans more choices and opportunities to give back to their neighborhoods and their country all through the means which they freely choose. “

Don`t listen to the sheep who posted above, here`s the real story:The Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act, known as the GIVE Act, was passed yesterday by a 321-105 margin and now goes to the Senate.
Under section 6104 of the bill, entitled “Duties,” in subsection B6, the legislation states that a commission will be set up to investigate, “Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed”.
Remember the Hitler Youth Corps.?Here we go again…

There is no “mandatory volunteering” legislation. First of all, that saying is a contradiction, as “volunteering,” by definition, cannot be mandatory. Secondly, no piece of legislation as you described (or anything vaguely resembling it) has been proposed.
P.S. Obama, as president, cannot propose legislation in the first place by law.

It’s not volunteering if you’re forced to do it!
